Weather plagued the weekend as severe storms and wet weather moved through the Southeast. With activities going on as planned on Saturday, strong storms on Sunday led to schedule adjustments and opened the opportunity for an ‘all group’ feature on Sunday afternoon.
Several classes saw repeat winners throughout the weekend, while a couple others saw the initial runner-up become victorious. In small bore production competition, John Nash dominated Group 3 winning both feature races in his 1962 Lotus Super Seven. Meanwhile, Andrew McLean led the way in Group 1 competition during the group’s first race, while Rick Fraser took the top step of the podium in their second race.
When it came to formula and open wheel cars, Daniel Becker dominated Group 2 in his 1977 Crossle 32F taking the class win in both the first and second feature, while Tom Fraelich bested the field in Group 9 with his 1979 March Super Vee.
James Freeman was a popular man on the podium throughout the weekend. First, he ruled the competition in Group 4 while racing his 1958 Devin SS, and later in Group 7 driving his 1968 Matich SR3.
In prototype competition, David Jans was the man to beat, earning both the Group 11 class win and the overall race win for both of his events. Driving his 2012 Ave-Riley AR-2, he’s now amassed five victories in the 2021 season after also being undefeated at Charlotte Motor Speedway last weekend.
Medium bore production competition saw three different winners with Douglas Hagopian in a 1968 Porsche 911, and John Nash in a 1961 Lotus Super Seven each taking a win in Group 8’s competition. Mark Brummond ruled Group 12B taking the win in his 1985 Alfa Romeo GTV 6.
The GT Cars of Group 10 had their own feature with Frank Cioppettini taking the victory in his yellow and black 1998 Chevrolet Camaro.
Scott Borchetta, always a force to be reckoned with, dominated Group 6 competition with his 1969 Chevrolet Corvette taking the group win in both features. In 12A competition, Phil Lasco bested the field in race one driving his 2013 Ford Mustang. However, in race two, it was Jeff Lindstrom who bettered his second-place finish from the first race to climb the podium’s top step after driving his 1998 Ford Mustang Coupe to the group win.
A group of Miatas also came to Road Atlanta with the Mazda Miata Heritage Cup. It was like seeing double in their races with the same guys finishing first in their classes, and first-and-second overall in each feature race. Tony Fornetti led the Miata NA class, taking the overall race win in each event, while M. Yusuf Mohamed trailed closely behind to finish second overall and win the Miata NB class.

SVRA will head to the West Coast next month kicking things off with the Sonoma SpeedTour, April 22-25. After a two-year hiatus from wine country, SVRA will be joined by the Trans Am Series presented by Pirelli and the ever-popular Historic Trans Am for an action-packed weekend. The following week, we’re headed 150 miles south to WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca – marking the first time that SVRA will race on the two legendary tracks on back-to-back weekends. The Trans Am SpeedFest, held April 28-May 2, will feature vintage racing from SVRA, a reunion race with Historic Trans Am and modern-day Trans Am racing with the Trans Am Series presented by Pirelli.
