CHARLOTTE (June 4, 2024) – Lyn St. James has been announced as the Grand Marshal for the upcoming Indy SpeedTour at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, June 13-16. In celebration of her 50th year in motorsports, St. James will serve as Grand Marshal for the weekend, giving the command to start engines before Saturday’s Formula Regional Americas Championship race.
“We’re thrilled to have Lyn St. James join us as the Grand Marshal for the Indy SpeedTour,” said Tony Parella, CEO of Parella Motorsports Holdings. “She’s been a trailblazer for women in motorsports. Having her join us at a track where she has accomplished so much—and during her 50th anniversary in motorsports—will certainly be special.”
An icon for women in motorsport, St. James became the first woman to win the Indianapolis 500 Rookie of The Year in 1992. Her accomplishments at the storied track continued as she made seven starts in the “Greatest Spectacle in Racing,” qualifying a career-high of sixth in 1994, and recording a career-best finish of 11th in 1992. St. James was also an accomplished endurance driver, winning the 24 Hours of Daytona twice, the 12 Hours of Sebring, and racing twice at the 24 Hours of Le Mans and once at the 24 Hours of Nürburgring. The veteran of 53 Trans Am starts, she earned seven top-five Trans Am finishes and several IMSA GT wins. She also set 21 national and international speed records and was named one of the “Top 100 Female Athletes of the Century” by Sports Illustrated. A long-time advocate for women’s racing involvement, St. James is the co-founder of Women in Motorsports North America (WIMNA), an organization devoted to supporting opportunities for women across all disciplines of motorsport.
St. James will join the drivers of FR Americas during a pre-race fan walk, where she will be available to meet fans, sign autographs and take photos. The fan walk is scheduled to take place on Indianapolis Motor Speedway’s pit lane at 12:30 p.m. ET on Saturday, June 15.
The Indy SpeedTour will welcome spectators to Indianapolis Motor Speedway, June 15-16. Featuring racing from the Sportscar Vintage Racing Association, Formula Regional Americas Championship, International GT and BWM Car Club of America, tickets are available at IMS.com.
